As 2024 draws to a close, we reflect on what has been an extraordinary year for Mount St. Joseph Girls’ College. This year marked the celebration of our 60th anniversary—a milestone filled with joy, gratitude, and acknowledgement of the incredible contributions made by the Sisters of St Joseph, as well as past and present staff and students. It was a privilege to have many Sisters join us for our Opening School Mass. Among them were those who taught at the College, whose dedication and commitment have been instrumental in shaping the vibrant community we are today. Their legacy remains an integral part of our past, present, and future.

Our theme for 2024, “Virtue Courage, Building a Bold Future,” resonated deeply with our community. The phrase reflects our long-standing College motto, “Virtue Courage”, which has been a guiding principle since 1964. The addition of “Building a Bold Future” reminds us of the vision and determination of Mary MacKillop and the Sisters of St Joseph. Their courage to establish a school in Altona 60 years ago ensured access to quality Catholic education for young women in the West—a commitment we proudly carry forward today.

We remain inspired by the pioneering spirit of the Sisters, who officially opened the school on 12 April 1964, a day described by the Catholic press as a “Proud Day for Altona Parish.” That pride continues today as we honour our heritage and our diverse, inclusive community. We are steadfast in our commitment to excellence and to standing against injustice while working for justice for all.

As the year comes to an end, I would like to express my gratitude to all our students. They have shown resilience, hard work, and a willingness to embrace the opportunities offered to them during the year and I am incredibly proud of their achievements. A special thank you to our Year 12 students who have been an amazing group of students and we wish them well in their future endeavours.

This year also marks the retirement of Marzia Devic after 40 years of dedicated service as our College Laboratory Technician. Marzia’s journey with MSJ began as a student, and she has since become an indispensable member of our staff, supporting countless students and colleagues with passion and commitment. We thank Marzia for her exceptional contributions and wish her all the best in her retirement.

We also take this opportunity to celebrate the outstanding achievements of our students at the annual Awards Night. These awards highlight the dedication, effort, and talent of students across all aspects of College life. Congratulations to all our award winners.

We are incredibly proud to announce the results of our 2025 Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) and Vocational Major (VM) students. Each student has worked incredibly hard throughout the past two years and these results are well deserved. Individually, we acknowledge the achievement of our College Duxes, Olivia Buttigieg and Siennah Wilson. We hope you all enjoy your break and we look forward to hearing of your future pathways and endeavours.

To our staff, thank you for your unwavering dedication to fostering an environment where faith, learning, and wellbeing thrive. Your passion and commitment are evident in all that you do, and we are deeply grateful for your contributions.

As we approach the Christmas season, let us carry the spirit of the Holy Family in our hearts—humility, love, and faith. It’s a time to celebrate the joy of giving, the beauty of family, and the hope that the birth of Jesus brings into our lives.

I wish each of you a joyful and holy Christmas. May this holiday season be filled with laughter, rest, and moments that remind you of all the blessings in your life.

Merry Christmas and God bless.
