At the end of Term 1, we say farewell to Helen McCaughey who began teaching at MSJ in 2000. Over those 22 years, she has taught across many domains in a range of subjects from Food Technology to English. Initially, Helen began as a replacement teacher for textiles, however, soon settled into her area of expertise in the Visual Arts, teaching all year levels. Teaching predominately junior art, Helen was able to provide a colourful and creative foundation for our senior students to showcase their artistic talent in Top Arts, Catholic Education exhibitions, as well as encouraging them to study fine arts at university. Helen’s art classes were a place of calm, an opportunity for students to express themselves through sketching botanicals, painting impressionist landscapes, or self-portraits in the style of Del Kathryn Barton. Students were engaged and enjoyed her classes, their work, always, colourful and free, her students were always proud of what they produced.
Her passion for both the Visual Arts and Performing Arts extended beyond the classroom, with amazing Senior Art Soirees, practising piano, and numerous visits to the Melbourne Ballet.
Helen has accepted a new position at Elphington Grammar.
The MSJ community will lose a little bit of its sparkle without Helen. We wish her all the best in her role at her new school.
