VET Music is all about learning what is needed for one to work in the Music Industry. The best way to prepare students is to participate in real life events and experience this firsthand. We are lucky to have Kindred Studios, a live music venue and rehearsal space, local to MSJ and enthusiastic to host our VET Student Showcase.
Let me tell you, the students absolutely rose to the occasion. Everyone played at an exceptional standard, and were regarded in high esteem by the guest assessor from Collarts, Seán Figgers.
The Year 11 students were the first to perform for the evening. These students are fantastic multi-instrumentalists, with each of the three bands containing instrument changes for different songs! The Year 12 cohort contains one soloist, Lucy English, and one band, Germination. Their growth over the year has been a joy to witness. All students delivered a set that showcased their unique voice, with highly engaging expressive techniques, stage presence and stylistic interpretations. They have one very proud teacher!

For my Yr 11 VET Music SAC on Wednesday 19 June, I had the opportunity to perform at Kindred Studios in Yarraville alongside Jazzy. It was such an amazing experience being able to perform outside of MSJ and it was great being able to support my fellow classmates during their performances. I was also grateful to be given the opportunity to further improve my stage presence and communication skills while performing. I enjoyed being able to perform with Jazzy, have fun on stage and showcase my singing talent to the audience. Singing is my passion and being able to perform at Kindred and receive so much praise and support from the audience was incredibly rewarding and memorable.
Erica Whitmore, Year 11
On Wednesday 24 July, as part of their play analysis unit, the Year 10 Drama class went on an excursion to see WICKED the musical at the beautiful Regent Theatre in Melbourne. The students sat in awe as the spectacle unfolded and thoroughly enjoyed their day at the theatre. Post-show, students have been looking at the Production Areas within WICKED - costume, set design, lighting, etc. and unpacking the themes in the show. It was a pleasure to take the students on this excursion and I’m glad they enjoyed their time.

LIFE CHANGING… How else could you describe WICKED? Everything was perfect, from the set design changing from an old dusty classroom to a ballroom filled with fairy lights signifying the night sky, to costumes changing from boring old black clothes to glitzy ball gowns where you could see the sparkles from a mile away.
During this production, the story made you feel for the characters and understand and connect with what they're going through, which is something really special to witness. I'm very grateful and glad I got to experience it with my classmates, and the best part was when it finished... The shock and the reaction of my classmates was priceless, and on the train ride home, we couldn’t stop talking about every little detail of the show.
Tara Madden, Year 10
Our Year 11 & Year 12 VET Music students journeyed to the music careers expo on Tuesday 13 August. The students enjoyed seminars, attended workshops, met with industry professionals and had the opportunity to learn about future courses and careers within the music industry. A key component of VET Music is learning about what it is like to work within the music industry so students really enjoyed this valuable experience. Thank you to Music Teacher, Ms Jacqueline Wong, for accompanying the students and sharing her own experiences within the music industry.
